Tasha Cobbs Leonard is getting ready to sing, but her fans– not so much.
On August 25, Leonard released her fourth album titled, “Heart. Passion, Pursuit.”
Although the album features gospel sensations, Bishop William Murphy in “Forever at Your Feet,” Kierra Sheard in “Your Spirit,”and Jimi Cravity in“You Know My Name,” it has received much backlash from gospel fans and Christian leaders because of Leonard’s choice to feature hip-hop rapper, Nicki Minaj in “I’m Getting Ready.”
Despite what fans and leaders say, Leonard stands by her decision to feature Minaj on the album. In a recent interview with Essence, she states, ” My assignment with this song was for a particular audience. Some [of the listeners] have never experienced God ever and she exposed that audience in her way, to the God that she loves.”
In addition, Leonard tells Essence because of the song many have been able to connect with God.
“The testimonies that have come because of this —I would absolutely do it again. I’ve had thousands of people say to me ‘This is the first time I’ve ever bought a gospel album. This is first time I’ve ever felt God. I didn’t believe in God until I heard this song.’”
