What is the main thought in your head this week? Are you worried, stressed out or thinking too much about a situation you shouldn’t be? It doesn’t matter if you are chatting with colleagues from work or watching television at home truth is daily situations influence and determine our thoughts in mind.
It is impossible to shut down our thoughts, ideas and concepts, neither is it what God wants us to do. However, while living in the world, He invites us to seek a healthy mind and shares with us the exact things we should think of in Philippians 4:8. “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”
Now that you are aware of these things, below are three reasons why God invites us to seek a healthy mind.
A healthy mind prevents us for sinning!
We may not realize it, but most of the sins we commit against God begin with a wrong thought. For example, as Christians, we believe we shouldn’t have sex until marriage. However, we sometimes find ourselves watching television shows that contain absurd sex scenes and scandalous relationships. And let’s be honest, at times it doesn’t seem to bother us when we have sex related chats with our friends. Nevertheless, all of these habits lead us to think more about sex which may lead us to give up on remaining pure.
Therefore, in order to prevent ourselves from sinning, we must obey God and “think on whatever is right” and “think on whatever is pure.” It is not an easy task, but it is possible to accomplish. To do so, we must be willing to give up some things we really enjoy like watching our favorite television show or going to certain clubs or bars with our friends.
A healthy mind gives us the strength to persist in the plan God has set for us!
In Brazil, for the past few years, we have been experiencing a political and economic crisis. One of the main topics brought up in our daily news is about our corrupt government and how there is no solution for our current situation. When I hear these conversations I tend to worry about my future. That is when I must remind myself of Romans 8:18, “I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.”
We must keep in mind that our lives don’t belong to this world; therefore, our hope is not in this world.Although we pass through hard times on Earth, God has a better plan for us in the future. Therefore, we cannot accept the lack of hope the world has offered us, we cannot get discouraged despite the situation of the world. Instead, we must think on “whatever is true” and we can only understand what those things are by reading the Bible — the Word of truth.
“For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12)
As it is written, the Bible is capable of judging our thoughts. And it is only by reading this book that we can understand what thoughts are wrong and right. Through this habit, we increase our faith in Christ and get the hope we need to press forward believing in the plan God has set for us.
A healthy mind helps us to become more like Christ.
“Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”(Colossians 3:1-2)
Sometimes, we get caught up in our earthly life, that we forget our main goal here on Earth is to become more like Christ. We were created to glorify God. All of our thoughts and attitudes should be to fulfill that purpose. When we set our minds on things above, we begin to think more like Christ and that leads us to act more like him.
Therefore, do not forget the importance of a healthy mind. Let the Bible judge your thoughts and be open to change your mind to whenever is necessary. We have an amazing God, but sometimes we are not able to see that because of our thoughts and attitudes. A healthier mind will make not only our lives better but also the lives of others once they recognize Christ in you!
