Hip-hop artists Chance the Rapper and Kendrick Lamar are unashamed to announce Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Given the opportunity to perform any song of his choice, Chance shocked the crowd by delivering an inspiring performance of “How Great” and “All We Got” with help from gospel artists Kirk Franklin and Tamela Mann at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards. In a recent interview with The New York Times, Kendrick says his upcoming album will focus on God because the world needs it. Nevertheless, Kendrick and Chance are not the only ones in secular entertainment utilizing their platforms to speak about Jesus. Below are a list of other athletes and entertainers who are as well.
- Russell Wilson shares his faith with the world.
Russell Wilson, star quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks, is very vocal about his faith. Last year, the media had a field day when Russell revealed in an interview with the Rock Church in San Diego that him and R&B sensation Ciara were practicing celibacy in their relationship prior to marriage. His boldness to share this helped to fuel the conversation of the importance of celibacy and following what God has commanded His people to do.
- Stephen Curry brings Jesus to the basketball court.
Stephen Curry, devoted Christian, is the reigning NBA MVP and guard for the Golden State Warriors. On the court, when he points his index figure to the sky, he is giving an outward sign and internal reminder that his success comes from God. In an interview with Decision Magazine, Curry says , “I know why I play the game, and it’s not to score 30 points a night, but it’s to use the stage I’m on. I’ve been put here for a specific purpose: to be a witness and to share my testimony as I go through it.”
- Tori Kelly ushers in worship at her shows.
Tori Kelly is a Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter. In many of her songs, she expresses her love for Jesus and Him overseeing her life. Furthermore, she has impromptu worship sessions during her shows. By including Jesus in her shows, her band praying in the middle of shows and singing God-inspired music, Tori is bringing light to Jesus in places others do not.
- Trai Byers uses his success as a Jesus promotional tool.
Trai Byers is one of the stars on Fox’s hit-show Empire. He plays Andre Lyon, the eldest son of Lucious and Cookie. In an interview with Christian Post he explains how his faith and relationship with God is seen his acting . “If God gave it to me, why not exercise it?” Trai said. “ I know a part of my journey now, the reason I’m an actor now, the platform that I have now. I’m supposed to share the Lord with people. All of us are disciples on some level. You don’t have to be behind the podium to tell a story, connect with people and share the Gospel.”
5. DeVon Franklin lives unashamed in Hollywood.
DeVon Franklin is an author, film producer, motivational speaker and preacher. In an interview Franklin shared with CBN that with God nothing is impossible.“I have put my faith front and center for everyone to see…not only has relying on my faith not harmed my career prospects, it has actually enhanced them,” DeVon said.
- LoLo Jones is placing celibacy above likes.
Lolo Jones is an American Olympian who is bold about her faith in the Lord. She has competed at both the summer and winter Olympics in track & field and as a bobsledder. Lolo utilizes her platform to share her testimony and how God means everything to her. She shared with The Gospel Herald that her faith is what gets her through difficult times. Lolo said, “I had to constantly remind myself, ‘When I am weak, He is strong. I’m really telling myself, ‘I can’t do this in my own strength.’ Even the Word says it’s not by your strength, it’s by God.”
- Allyson Felix runs the race for God.
Allyson Felix is the most decorated U.S. woman in track & field history. Despite her success, Allyson manages to stay humble and attributes it to her faith in God. She shared with the Los Angeles Times that faith is her fitness fuel. Allyson said, “Faith leads my life. That’s definitely the reason that I run. I definitely feel like I’ve been blessed with this gift, and so that’s something that helps me to see the bigger picture. It’s so easy to get caught up in winning everything and just the kind of the grind of what professional sports is, but it definitely helps me to kind of pull back and see that there’s a greater purpose.”
Although Allyson strives to be the best runner in the world, her goal is to grow her faith in God and remember what is the most important thing at the end of the day– her relationship with Jesus Christ.
